Hollywood’s Version

Standard

Hollywood likes to promote public relations as just as a publicist. Look at the popular character Samantha Jones, from Sex and the City, and how she portrayed the role of a public relation specialist.  This has helped the industry, because it has gotten more people to take notice of what is happening with the public relations field. There are also more people who choose to study the field public relations. The growth of the industry has created large organizations, websites and other tools for public relations professionals. The public relations code of ethics is more strictly followed for most.

This also has hurt the industry of public relations. People only see the “spin doctors” or celebrity crisis managers. There is so much more to the field than that yet people still can’t describe public relations. I believe you have to do public relations to truly understand it since their perception is only Hollywood’s portrayal of public relations.

We need to change these images. Public relation practitioners do not want to be grouped in with lawyers, dentists and other professions people are scared of. If people realize that public relations involves press releases, crisis management, brand management, etc. We are here to help and grow other businesses, events, charities, etc.

To do this we need to have a real reality show about people in the public relations field. A publicist , CEO, event manager, social media monitor, etc. should all be followed on the show. This would give people a broader perspective on what actually goes on in the day to day process.

Inspiration

Standard

There are so many different people who inspire me that I can’t just name one. There are people who own their own clothing stores, people who travel to distant places, my roommates, my friends, my sorority sisters and my family. They have helped shape the person I am today. Without them there would be little motivation to succeed as much as they do. They all drive me to be better than I already am. I look to them inspiration and consolation.

There are so many people who lead charitable lives that I am envious of and strive to be less selfish to mirror them.

I hope that I inspire others. I want to live a life where people know they can count on me and trust me.

Time is Ticking

Standard

Time management. Two words we hear teachers say from our middle school years and on. Some students take planners to heart and others just hate when teachers “make” them write stuff.

I myself didn’t always take to the whole planner concept, but then I found myself forgetting assignments without it. I am now an avid planner user and advocate for planners. I write everything thing down, highlight things I have accomplished. If I don’t have my planner on me which is a rare occasion, I make a note in my phone.

I also keep busy. You think this would have the opposite effect on my time management, but it helps. The busier I stay the better I am about being on time to my appointments.

GET INVOLVED!

I work, am a member of multiple organizations, intern, in a relationship and still make time for other people in my life.  I am not saying your life is not filled if you don’t have some of the things mentioned in your life, but I do believe it is important to be involved with more than one thing.

Another way to manage your time is to remember it is NOT just your time. Your actions affect those around you. Once you understand this you will have a greater appreciation for time management.

Remember the golden rule, do unto others as you would have done unto you.

Also, realize you are human. You cannot do everything you want to do. You need to make choices and decide what is more important to you.
